Electric Bench: Fabrication Comes Second

Even our benches are cool and just as much thought, planning, and fun went into their development as we put into our other projects. In the second part of this blog series, find out more about how our fabrication department took customer feedback and turned it into a project that is eye catching, flexible, and able to provide comfy breaks for people during gameplay.

Installation Date: 3/9/2019

Project Duration: 3 Weeks – 18 Benches

The next step in creating the Electric Playhouse benches was creating a pattern on the sides that allows light out.

The final pattern we used was created by Owen and contained a secret message that relates to the narrative of Electric Playhouse. The pattern combines the physical and digital worlds converting the text “Electricorp is Watching” to binary then creating a pattern out of the ones and zeros.

We both did some preliminary design ideas and ended up setting on very similar styles. These styles consisted of a single sheet of plywood folded around plywood legs with a pattern cut into it to get the light out.

After testing the edge we began the industrial design phase. We really wanted to keep the benches as efficient to fabricate as possible because we knew that we were going to need to build a lot. Some of the methods we used to achieve this were, adding waffling so that each leg would slide together making assembling very quick. We also added lots of holes for wire management. This gave us the ability to nest all the components on one sheet of plywood, cut the sheet on the CNC and assemble right after the sheets are finished cutting. This whole process is all able to be completed within an hour.

In part 3, find out about our big plans for gamifying our benches. Yes, you read that right: Gamified Seating. You can read part 3 here. If you skipped part 1 and would like to go back, click here.
